Bodika under Pečke

Bodika is located in the Pečke primeval forest. With a circumference of 78 cm, it ranks among the thickest hollies (Ilex aquifolium) in the Dolenjska region. In Slovenia, some hollies even exceed a circumference of 180 cm. The tree is in a mature phase, vital, and stands out for its height. In nature, the holly is a relatively rare evergreen broadleaf tree. Several growth sites are known in the Kočevski Rog area, with more frequent occurrences around Mirna gora. It usually grows as a shrub species in the shade of fir-beech forests, and more rarely as a tree.

Interesting facts:

The leaves near the ground are mostly spiny, while on older trees they are usually without thorns.

In different years, it develops either male or female flowers, thus changing its sex.

Evergreen trees were planted near churches, monuments, and homesteads as a symbol of life.

Due to its rarity, it has been listed as a protected plant species since 1922.

The fruits of the Bodika are poisonous, so do not eat them!
