Božidar Jakac Art Museum

In 1974, the Božidar Jakac Gallery was established in the renovated premises of the former Cistercian monastery in Kostanjevica na Krki. It is one of the largest Slovenian galleries in terms of exhibition space and collection size. With its art collections—centered around works by Slovenian expressionists—and temporary exhibitions, it brings life to this exceptional cultural monument and its surroundings. The gallery is named after the artist Božidar Jakac, and also features permanent exhibitions of artists such as Jože Gorjup, Tone Kralj, France Kralj, France Gorše, Janez Boljka, Zoran Didek, Bogdan Borčić, and the Pleterje Collection of European painters, which belongs to the nearby Pleterje Charterhouse. The former monastery church and lapidarium are dedicated to major exhibition projects specially prepared for these venues. The gallery also manages two off-site exhibition spaces: the Gorjup Gallery in the Jože Gorjup Primary School and the Lamut Art Salon in a former ministerial mansion on the island. Since 1961, the international sculpture symposium Forma viva has taken place in Kostanjevica na Krki, recognized as the oldest ongoing symposium of its kind in the world. Over the years, more than 100 sculptures have been created and are displayed around the Božidar Jakac Gallery and throughout Kostanjevica na Krki.
