Žužemberk castle

Žužemberk Castle is one of the most picturesque and typical medieval fortresses in Slovenia. Its remains stand majestically on a steep cliff above the Krka River. The stone gate of the four-sided tower is said to bear the carved year 1000, indicating that the castle was likely commissioned by Wilhelm I, husband of Saint Emma, who was then the frontier lord of the Savinja region. The most attention and visitors are drawn during the Market Days with a medieval fair, held as part of the celebration of the municipal holiday on July 15th.
