Rožek Forest Educational Trail

The Rožek Forest Educational Trail is a 1.2 km long circular forest trail. The starting point is located at the parking lot of the Forest Management Unit in Podturn. Signposts first lead you to the ruins of the former Rožek Castle from the 13th century. In the sinkhole behind the ruins lies a koliševka – a karst sinkhole, which is one of the lowest-lying natural habitats of spruce forest in Europe. The trail continues through a natural fir-beech forest past a “blower” – an opening connected to the karst cave Jazbina. Warmer air rises from the cave, creating strong airflow that, on colder days, becomes visible as thick mist. The Jazbina cave was once used as a cold storage cellar for the castle’s brewery and today serves as a bat habitat. It can only be viewed from the entrance. The pleasant path eventually leads to an arboretum, where you’ll find a plantation of various non-native tree species. With the help of information boards, visitors can identify the names and origins of these trees.
