The Črmošnjica Fir
The Črmošnjica fir is the thickest common fir (Abies alba Mill.) in Slovenia and simultaneously the most powerful tree giant of the Kočevski Rog region.
The tree has a distinct root system, with the crown starting at a height of 15 meters and tapering into a pyramid shape. Despite its old age, it remains vital, although its growth in diameter and height has slowed down. It grows on shallow karst soils along the route of the former Žaga Rog forest railway. With its grandeur, it convinced the foresters over a century ago not to cut it down.
The fir tree is a key component of the Dinaric fir-beech forests. Over the past 40 years, its share in the forest stock has significantly decreased. The cause lies in the decline of vitality and excessive browsing of young shoots, due to the overpopulation of deer, which hinders the regeneration of forests.
